The Teacher
March 15, 2010At the beginning of this semester, my acting teacher, Susan asked me, “What do you want to learn?” I freaked out a little. What do you mean? I learn what you tell me to learn. You give information and I retain it. That’s how it’s supposed to be, right?
I had never been asked this question before. Which now that I’ve thought about it, seems pretty weird. Susan said that in our class, she is working for us and we are working for ourselves. Here came the lightbulb moment. I have always done my classes in attempt to make my teacher proud, to give my teacher what he or she wants. But that is so wrong!! I am here for me; no one else. This is my education and who I want to be. I will get out of these experiences what I put into each of them. So, I told Susan what I want.
I want…
- the tools to make me one of the greats.
- to have an effect on others.
- to make a mark on this trade.
- to reach those crazy heights, the seemingly impossible goals.
- to bring out the best in me.
